MELBOURNE PAVILION HISTORY

Now

Melbourne Pavilion is one of Victoria’s newest and most unique event destinations. Set in an inner-city heritage-listed building, you will find a stunning combination of new contemporary design and existing old-world charm. Crystal chandeliers set the mood with modern décor making this a truly remarkable venue for your special occasion.

The Melbourne Pavilion is a unique multi-layered event destination. Set in a magnificent, fully renovated heritage-listed art deco building at the edge of Melbourne’s CBD. Its stunning design is centered on the soaring and elegant freestanding timber ceiling arches, the last remaining example of this original architectural construction in Australia. Historic detail blends with the contemporary architectural refurbishment of rich and inviting colour, soft textural fabrics and upholstery, warm lighting effects with crystal chandeliers, and a Moroccan-inspired theme.

The Melbourne Pavilion is a truly remarkable event in itself, offering voluminous event space for a significant corporate function or a uniquely intimate surround to celebrate your special occasion.

The Past

The Melbourne Pavilion began life as the Burge Bros Factory in Flemington. It was constructed in 1945-46 to a design by C.T Gilbertson with application to building rushed to meet the urgent need from government to manufacture materials for defence purposes. Over the years, it has been a spring factory, a foundry, and housed the extensive wardrobe for the movie “Pharlap” filmed locally throughout Flemington.

Step outside and observe a rectilinear style reminiscent of the work of Dutch modernist Willem Dudok. Step inside, and the curved roof of the large factory is supported on glue-laminated (now the oldest and earliest known example of this method in Australia) arches spanning 30 meters. The arches are made up of 29 laminated sections of coachwood and form a sizeable column-free factory area – making this a space of scientific and architectural importance to the State of Victoria.
